What is The Higher Plain, Inc.?

Higher Plain, Inc. is a private non profit 501(c ) (3) corporation located in West Branch Iowa that works in partnership with local, regional, and state entities to design, develop, and access funding, and manage innovative community–based projects that help Iowans achieve quality health care, particularly in the area of mental health.

The following is a case study of how communities can partner with Higher Plain on the Beyond Depression Project.

Building Healthy Communities

Our guiding principal is that quality health care happens when three groups - the community in general, medical providers, and consumers and their families share responsibility for maintaining health. We believe that by working together we can build healthy systems in families, communities and organizations.

Higher Plain’s current focus is on depression. We have taken on this initiative because Depression causes more disability than any other disorder in the United States. Together we can do much to spread the word that depression is a physical disorder that can be treated with a great degree of success.

What Do We Know About Healthy Communities?

Healthy Communities:

  • Know the risks and frailties of their members and provide support services to meet their needs.
  • Work together to reduce the stigma of mental illness.
  • Recognize their ability to reduce the human and economic costs of untreated depression.
  • Have members who know how to encourage people and refer them for treatment.
  • Enable professionals and others to cooperate on education and confidential screening.
